At the foot of the mountain in the heart of Bulgaria, on both sides of a picturesque mountain river is nestled the town of Tryavna. It's difficult to say in what season the city is most beautiful - the air is crystal clear: the flowers, grass and woods all around just change the color of their attire.
But it is not only the beautiful scenery that makes this town so charming - the people are one of its greatest treasures, because they are not ordinary people, but ones endowed with a rich spirit and talent. These are people who have built and decorated hundreds of churches, monasteries, schools, houses and bridges not only in the Bulgarian lands, but also far beyond the country's borders. There are historical records of the existence of Tryavna which date as far back as 1565.
And today, there is no doubt about what the high self-esteem of these people is due to - the knowledge and craftsmanship they possess. They are not rich in terms of money, other are their riches: one of the first schools, one of the first community centers, one of the first book stores, one of the first Art Schools of Bulgaria during the Renaissance are theirs.
Even today, what makes Tryavna different are the art crafts it is famous for - carving, icon painting and interior architecture. Tryavna Art School is the only one that continues existing now in the face of the High School of Arts and the many carving and carpentry workshops, some of which are operated by descendants of the old masters possessing the Renaissance spirit and sense of aesthetics of their ancestors. This spirit can also be felt in the church and every other building in the streets and in the air of the city, this spirit fills you with pride to be part of the magic of this land.
